This lecture is the 15th in a series on the application of certain concepts of optimization and graph theory. During this semester, the lectures have been concerned with the application of optimization to urban traffic network modelling. This seventh and last lecture of the semester will build on the ideas that were introduced in the earlier lectures and introduce the topic of the estimation of origin–destination (O-D) travel information based on and imprecise input data.
Knowledge of motorists’ O-D travel information is necessary for a wide range of transportation planning activities. The high cost of human effort and other expenses associated with conventional survey techniques for O-D estimation have motivated the development of models that can inexpensively estimate these flows from easily available traffic link volumes. In this lecture, we develop an approach for estimating these O-D flows based on only an imprecise set of link volume information. As discussed in previous lectures, this consideration introduces nonlinearities in the cost function of the model because of the dependence of link travel costs on link volumes. This requires the determination of an heuristic (approximate) solution to the proposed model. Such a solution is determined by iteratively approximating the nonlinear model using a sequence of linear programs.
The topics to be discussed include:
An Introduction to Estimating O-D Flows
Linear Programming Models of O-D Flow Estimation
A Solution Procedure for O-D Flow Estimation
A Numerical Example
